Andrew Kay's food & drink reviews: November 21st, 2008

Andrew Kay on the perfect sausage roll and Sevendials gets ready to celebrate seven great years

Say sausage roll to me and you’re unlikely to get me excited. That was until I first tasted one of Edward’s luxury sausage rolls. That was some time ago at Sussex and the City. Then I discovered I could get them at The Sir Charles Napier, where I am a regular on Sunday evening for the quiz. Yes, if I have failed to eat properly I will treat myself to one of his sausage rolls, my current favourite being a chorizo style that packs a nice paprika kick. In fact even if I have eaten well I can be tempted to one, as they are really very good and a million miles away from the dismal, soggy, fat-drenched offerings so often found these days.

Dani's Diary: November 21st, 2008

Dani is cheered by the election of Barack Obama but annoyed by bad driving

I am excited today. The odd thing is that I am excited about things of a political nature. That has never happened. This morning as I write we found out that Barack Obama is to be the new president of America. I am happy about this. To be perfectly honest I didn’t think it was going to happen – but for the first time since Christmas I woke up happy. I am not really into politics at the best of times but this election really got me going – as it did many other people I know. One person I know would turn any conversation regarding the election onto a subject slightly closer to her heart. That is the ‘Americanisation’ of us. Mainly the Americanisation of our language.

Model City: November 21st, 2008

Sandra Omo examines why so many models previously waited on tables

Why are so many models waiters? This has become such a norm that whenever I see a successful model, I ask myself: “Was he or she ever a waiter?” And the answer is always ‘yes’. Yes in the early days when he or she was waiting for a breakthrough. It’s not just models who know what it is like to be waiters, as actors and dancers and other forms of entertainers take to waiting for the time being before they get their breakthrough.

I know countless models, and I keep meeting more, who are into waiting in one bar or restaurant or the other. For me it’s easy to tell if the person putting my drink or food on the table is into what I do or not. I see it in the way they walk and talk, and even smile. The intention to impress, which is very important in modelling, is always there. For a normal diner, it’s just another polite waiter, but I know it’s another model waiting for a breakthrough.

» Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Interview

Features, Interviews, Music, News: November 19th, 2008

Goth-rock legends Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds play the Brighton Centre this week. Nick Aldwinckle spoke to Bad Seeds and Grinderman drummer and frontman of The Vanity Set, Jim Sclavunos

What have you been up to lately?
I’ve been doing a lot of sessions in New York. I have a studio and a friend down in Long Island and we’ve been working with a band called The Bellmer Dolls. They’re named after the Dadaist Hans Bellmer who used to make obscene doll sculptures. I’m about to do a Vanity Set session too. We’ve just finished a US Bad Seeds too, so this is my ‘in-between time’. We played the Hollywood Bowl with Spiritualised and Cat Power on the bill. It was a thrill to play such an iconographic venue. We’re heading to Europe for a tour, playing a few places we haven’t played before.

Do you come to Brighton much?
The last time we were in Brighton was with Grinderman, when we played a secret gig at the King Alfred Centre. It was fun. What’s not to like about Brighton?
